Five years ago on Boxing Day, the Tsunami killed more than 228,000 people across 14 countries, affecting five million people who lost homes or access to food and water. 4.5 million of those people received recovery assistance from the Red Cross. The British Red Cross (BRC) will be using the run up to Christmas and Boxing Day to highlight their work to help tsunami affected communities in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives rebuild their lives. Over 130,000 lives and 2,900 houses were built back stronger to better withstand future disasters in the largest recovery and reconstruction programme in the organisation’s history since the Second World War. The achievements have been huge – thanks to the generosity of the British public.

The digital strategy which needed to not only inform and thank donors but also acquire new British Red Cross supporters required Being to generate a viral video ad, website, online PR, print,  and an expansive social media campaign, all with the ultimate aim to drive audiences to take a 'Decisions for recovery' interactive challenge.

Being's flash based digital interactive challenge: Decisions for recovery :

As the disaster recovery manager for the British Red Cross, it’s up to you to direct and co-ordinate the Tsunami recovery effort and help rebuild lives. Real life choices are getting harder, and lives, livelihoods, and reducing the risk of future disasters depend on your decisions. So when so many people are suffering, who do you help first? What resources will you deploy? What difference will your decisions make?

‘Decisions for Recovery’  takes an innovative approach to explaining how BRC helped communities recover from the Tsunami, by placing them in the shoes of an aid agency disaster recovery manager. The interactive challenge is based on role-play to force the participant to think and understand real live dilemmas and difficult choices to be made in recovering from a major disaster. The challenge is housed on a new BRC Micro site recoveringafuture.org built and hosted by Being which also contains an interactive map of where BRC helped communities to rebuild their lives. For each country and location case studies, images and videos can be unlocked to bring the programmes to life.
